Created by British artist George Henry Longly, CHRONOS is a large-scale public artwork situated at Fresh Wharf on the banks of the River Thames.
Taking its title from the ancient concept of time, the work responds to the history of its location close to the site of a former Roman wharf, a place shaped over centuries by movement, labour and exchange. Drawing on fragments of London’s architectural past, natural formations and celestial imagery, the artwork brings together different scales of time, material and place.
Realised in stone, marble, brass and polished stainless steel, the installation is formed from a complex composition of sweeping geometric elements extending across the building façade.
Southside Waterjet was responsible for the precision waterjet cutting and fabrication of the stone elements, translating the artwork’s intricate geometry into individually cut components ready for installation. The project demonstrates the role precision fabrication can play in realising ambitious, large-scale artistic commissions in natural stone.
The completed installation creates a striking architectural focal point within the landscaped riverside setting, bringing together art, material and craftsmanship at an impressive scale.
